Mildred is a 5-year-old, female pet pig who came to foster care about 2 years ago. Mildred, like her daughter, Bessy, needed immediate rescue and luckily one of our PPN volunteers was there to take the call.
Mildred's human mother called our foster home in a panic. Apparently her husband had been physically abusing her, the children and the animals. Finally she had enough courage to have him arrested, but she did not know how long he would be in jail. This poor battered woman was planning to move out of her farm immediately,
with the hopes her husband would not find her again. Despite her fright and need to move quickly, she was very concerned about her animals and wanted to place all of them in new homes so they too could escape the abuse. PPN saved Mildred and Bessy. Although from outward appearances, Mildred is a very adoptable pet pig, when you get near her or try to get to know her, you can tell she had been badly abused.
She often passed over for adoption because she is completely afraid of people and cannot really be touched. From the stories our volunteer heard, Mildred's human father would swing the pigs by their back legs when they were small and hit or kick them too. We believe he tortured and teased Mildred for most of her life. As you can imagine, Mildred is still traumatized from her rough beginnings. Even after being
well cared for in our foster home, she still does not trust humans. We are hopeful that if Mildred and Bessy find the right homes, they will both learn that not all humans are bad and may even become a little less people shy. Until then, they are both safe and secure in foster care, never to be abused again. Your sponsorship of
this wonderful pig will help to defray the costs of caring for her and will help us to help many other pigs like Mildred who are just waiting for a second chance. |
